Description

Following the nationalisation of Britain’s railways in 1948, the authorities set about designing and building a range of locomotives capable of working throughout the network. The result was a ‘family’ of designs providing ease of maintenance and operation. They performed on everything from fast passenger to pick up freight.

Archive film from the 1950s and 1960s taken throughout the network is used to illustrate each design together with a brief look at some of the survivors at work in recent years.
