The definitive archive history of steam on the Southern Region in 1965. The year started with 325 locomotives, from the Bulleid Pacifics, plus some Southern Railway types. In this programme we explore the Southern in 1965,  its main line services, specials and cross country workings. In addition we include a special well ‘off region’! 

Maunsell Commemorative Railtour on the 3rd of January with ‘U’ Class, ‘Q’ Class & ‘N’ Class  on the run to Wimbledon, Reading and Tonbridge.

Cross Country Steam  on the line from Guildford to Redhill with Standard and Southern designs. Plus freight and shunting at Guildford.

Winter 1965 a summary of the steam fleet with workings on the main line including Basingstoke, Woking & Fleet.

The East Devon Railtour  from Waterloo to Axminster and the nearby branches.

Six Counties Railtour on the 7th of March with 31639 & 33006 well ‘off region’ on a trip to Stratford Upon Avon. 

Spring 1965  with steam on the main line from Waterloo to Basingstoke with a wide range of classes.

The Wessex Downsman  on 4th April 1965 to Reading, Bristol & the Somerset & Dorset.

Bulleid Pacific Railtour  on the 23rd of May from Birmingham to Exeter.

Guildford to Horsham  prior to closure in June with the last special.

Summer 1965  Steam  to the South Coast at Bournemouth & Weymouth with freight and passenger workings including bankers on Upwey Bank and the Swanage Branch.

Summer on the Isle of Wight   02 tanks on the line to Ventnor.

Bournemouth West Closure  with steam prior to closure in September.

4472 on the Southern  ‘Flying Scotsman’ on a special from Waterloo to Weymouth.

Vectis Farewell Railtour   on the 3rd of October to the South Coast and the Isle of Wight.

Dec 1965  and the closing weeks of steam action.
