Description

The age of mechanical signalling on the National Network is drawing to a close. In this series we document the last areas of semaphore signalling and signal boxes against a backdrop of passenger and freight workings. In this programme we explore the lines North from Peterborough, throughout Lincolnshire and in and around the East Midlands in the former Eastern Region of British Railways.

Peterborough and the signal boxes old and new along the East Coast Main Line – the line through Sleaford and Boston to the East Coast at Skegness with a look back at the line and the veteran somersault signals –  Reminders of the ‘Joint Line’ through Spalding – Coal traffic through Worksop and the box at Maltby – Signalling on the colliery line through Shirebrook and Clipstone to the last of Nottinghamshire’s mines at Thoresby – The lines through Newark and Lincoln to South Humberside – The route from Gainsborough and Brigg to Barnetby- A detailed look at the semaphores and signalboxes at Wrawby Junction and Barnetby along with film from the early 1990s and first generation traction  – The route through South Humberside to Brocklesby and Grimsby – the branch to Barton on Humber with the manually worked crossings and signalboxes.
