Away from the glamour of the main line existed a network of branches and secondary lines serving virtually every corner of the country. A wide variety of steam power toiled away on an extensive system. In this programme we explore the by-ways of the great days of working steam using colour archive film and some ‘past & present’ views.

Southern branches – featuring the Hawkhurst and Lymington Branches.
Western Contrasts – with former GWR motive power on the Marlow Branch and in the North of Scotland with the delightful line from The Mound to Dornoch.
Along the Cornish Coast – featuring the line through St Agnes and Perranporth to Newquay.
Gloucestershire Steam By-Ways – the Berkeley Road to Sharpness and Aschursh to Upton Upon Severn branches plus the celebrated branch from Grange Court Junction to Hereford via Ross on Wye.
By-Ways through the Heart of Wales – the branches radiating from Brecon and the hub of a delightful system of long lost branches. Features the Brecon to Colbren and Neath lines – plus the branch through Three Cocks Junction to Builth Road and Llanidloes.
